ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the
effectiveness of the two treatment modalities, surgical excision and aspiration with
steroid injection of dorsal wrist ganglion.
Study Design: A prospective
descriptive study.
Place and Duration of Study: This
is multicentre study conducted at department of Orthopaedics Dow University of Health
Sciences, Jinnah Medical College Hospital & Remedial Centre Hospital from June 2007 to
June 2008.
Patients and Methods: A total of
137 patients were included in this study. All patients were thoroughly examined to exclude
the other causes of wrist swelling. The patients were divided into two groups A and B
according to their choice of treatment. Group A were treated by surgical excision and
group B were treated by aspiration followed by steroid injection.Baseline data were
recorded preoperatively and postoperative data obtained at the intervals of 02
weeks,
06 weeks, 03 months, 06 months and 1 year. At the end of 01 year data form completed and
result analyzed.
Results: Patient's satisfaction
was higher in group A after surgical excision even if the ganglions recurred. The
recurrence rate was 24% in surgical excision group and 43% in aspiration with steroid
injection group B.
Conclusion: In this study
excision had better results comparing to aspiration and injection.
